Tensei - New Material Pioneers of The Second Harvest

We are a Material Science company

Established in 2016 to develop new compound materials in laboratory using waste after the primary food crop has been harvested. These include straw, grasses, husks, nuts, shells, canes and skins, which we refer to as Second Harvest™.

Whilst we recognise the valuable part managed forestry plays to industry, our aim is simple:

to minimize the world’s dependence on virgin wood fibres, by keeping trees in the ground, therefore helping to reduce pressure on a finite resource.

Eucalyptus absorbs 26.9 tonnes of CO2 per hectare

Versus 5.9 per hectare for straw

Annual paper demand set to rise

with virgin pulp accounting for 40% of industrially harvested forest

Projected shortfall of 250million hectares

of managed forest by 2050

Trees take between 50-500 years to grow

Hemp takes 100 days

2.5 billion tonnes of Agricultural Residue available

Currently only 3% of the total pulp market is agricultural
residues or non wood fibre

What is Smart
Plant Fibre Blending?

Tensei are specialists in material innovations that help protect the planet. We utilise alternative natural fibres to engineer the next generation of materials. These are bespoke compound materials that use agricultural waste crops, perennial grasses or unrealized bio-waste streams (from places like the food manufacturing industry).

Our materials: 100% plastic & wood free, 100% recyclable*

Consumers

It’s not always easy to know what to do with packaging when you’re finished with it. Products that use plant fibres are more sustainable – because they cut down less trees, they are recyclable with other paper products, and even compostable.
